The work developed for Hybrids is inspired by current debates in science and technology with regards to hybridization. For examples, the development of hybrid energies such as bio-fuels is considered by many of us as beneficial to our society and the environment. The development of other hybrids triggers some debate. This is illustrated by recent scientific achievements such as, the creation of new animals (e.g. mice or pigs) with human genes or the development of genetically modified plants to produce chemicals and drugs. The work displays a 'symbolic hybrid landscape' constructed by a variety of structures, which take their origins in photographs from our natural world (e.g. forests, trees) as well as from medical photographs (e.g. ophthalmic photographs). The original photographs are removed from their familiar context, broken down into fragmented flat shapes, synthesized and hybridized with each other so that progressively new images began to be created and these images acquire a 'life' of their own. The installation itself is eventually created from numerous interacting media - combining the medical photographs, acrylic paint, drawings and digital projections onto drawings and paintings, questioning the suggested hybrids in terms of their physical, fictional or virtual qualities, and further blurring the distinction between what might be imaginary and what might be real.
