"Synthesis" is a body of work that engages with ideas of growth and expansion in our natural, scientific and technological worlds in an attempt to create new artifical realities. These new realities take their origins in images found in our natural environment. For example, landscape elements that have unique growth characteristics (such as trees, forests) and landscape elements that have properties of transformation (such as snow, water, or foliage leaves). Working with digital editorial and animation tools, these images are broken down into small "digital units", which are then manipulated, recombined, and often programed to create a new base and a different image. The digital images are then realized using a variety of media: digital prints, painting, wall drawings and animation. Thus, a new reality is progressively created, which is in fact, a derivative of the original images themselves. Interplaying concepts of fusion and fragmentation, familiar and unknown, imaginary and real, the installation creates a space where uncertainty and anxiety co-exists, and a frame to question the nature and the favorablness of the suggested artificial realities. |
